MAI PIU -- Never More
by Davide Bigazzi

Mai Piu
Artist Statement:

I made this plate in support of the people of the city of New York regarding the tragic events of September eleventh.

This piece was not meant to convey a message of sadness, negativity, or defeat. To the contrary, my message is of hope, courage, and strength -- strength in the spirit, unity, and character, of the American people.

In the piece, the towers are intact, transparent, and luminous. What they represented can never be destroyed in the hearts and spirit of the people. They are ever present. Each of the thousands and thousands of pieces of paper which covered the city represent a person, a victim, a personal story.

I created fifty pieces of paper with different surface textures, symbolic of the fifty United States. There are images such as: the American flag; the firemen's helmets -- an homage to their valiant sacrifice; the date 9/11 - forever engraved in our memory; the smoke which burned our eyes; and broken glass -- representing those who were lost.

The lower half of the plate is dark and disordered -- one paper on top of another other, as if covered by the initial pain, anger, fear, and feelings of vengeance. The focal point of the plate is a singular deep rip. This torn piece represents a break in the harmony and security that we all experienced -- a security that we thought untouchable. However, as the paper rises it becomes more translucent and ordered. Light and hope replaces destruction.

Everything is captured on a round surface. This is the knowing world - whose living inhabitants are charged with remembering the sacrifice of innocents. I hope this piece will illuminate our minds so that this may never happen again. The title of this piece is Mai Piu - Never Again.
